30 Days of gaming post 24 – Favorite classic game

I have a few choices for this, but I’m going with Resident Evil 2 as my main pick.

This week’s announcement that the next Resident Evil will be a full-on four-player coop experience left a bad taste in my mouth, and I know I’m not alone.

Gamers have been yearning for Capcom to take RE back to its roots with fixed cameras, slow pacing and nonconstant enemy encounters. We’re tired of over-the-shoulder action.

Resident Evil 2 was the series at its best. It only took one sequel (one and a half if you count RE: Director’s Cut) for Capcom to perfect the gameplay. There were two playable characters and four total campaign scenarios on two discs. That’s twice the content you get for some of today’s games and it was much cheaper back then.

I wish Capcom would take RE back. The RE5 DLC Lost in Nightmares was a taste of what the development team could and should be doing for the series. Not taking it into a four-player coop direction. We already have Left 4 Dead and it’s doing just fine. Thanks, but no thanks, Slant Six.

My runners up are Goldeneye and Perfect Dark.

I don’t think I need to add much explanation here. In an age of cover shooters that all feel the same, I want something more like these games. Eurocom’s Goldeneye remake was a very nice change of pace last fall. I want that on the Xbox 360 with prettier graphics. I also expect Crysis 2 to be fun, but I haven’t played it yet.
